Benefits of Music Education

from: Kyle Besser

Music education is becoming more popular in the world we live in today partly due to the results of many studies that have been conducted to evaluate the effects of music education. Studies have proven that there are many benefits from music education. These benefits are extensive and far reaching.

Music education helps develop intelligence even in newborns. Music education helps develop reasoning and language skills when begun at an early age. Music education helps older children extend their knowledge of the things in the world around them. Music education can help children to be successful in school and in society, which in turn helps them be successful in life.

Music education helps students be more successful in school. Studies show that music education helps reduce unsuitable behavior from students, such as arguing and fighting with each other. Music helps children relax and puts them in a happier and friendlier mood. Studies have proven that students who participate in music education are less likely to use tobacco or alcohol products than students that have no type of music education.

Music education is very valuable as an aid to learning other subjects, especially mathematics. There was one study involving second graders. They divided the second graders into two groups. One group used newly designed math software to improve their mathematical skills. The other group used the same software, and had piano keyboard training at the same time. The second group scored 27% higher on the math test they were given than the first group, showing the positive effect of music education on learning math skills.

Music education also helps students with their communication skills. This has also been proven by some of the many studies done throughout the years. A student that finds it hard to concentrate may find it easier when music is added. Music education helps students to become more self-disciplined and able to control their behavior better by providing them with an acceptable form of self-expression.

When students learn how to study music successfully, they can use the methods to help them study in other classes. It will be easier for them to understand and follow instructions easier. Music education increases children's creativity and helps them learn how to cooperate with other students.

Another benefit of music education is that it shows students that they need to work hard to accomplish the things they want out of life. If they want to achieve the best music performance possible, they have to work for it by studying and practicing. The same is true for everything else, so they learn to apply this hard work to other areas of their life.
